Massage therapy jobs are in demand as there is a shortage of massage therapists across the US. For most, your career in massage will start with having a job in massage at either a massage franchise, a spa of some sort or in a clinical situation.

Entry level jobs for massage therapists pay around $15 an hour depending on where you live. Your pay will also depend on your experience and your ability to negotiate your pay and benefits. Since there is a shortage of massage therapists your goal will be to convince massage business owners that you are worth more.

The thing to remember though with a job in massage is that you usually are paid on commission or are paid separate hourly rates for when you have a client vs when there is no massage appointment. You may also be asked to sell products, sell memberships and other services/products.

One of the most confusing aspects of having a job in massage is determining the correct status. Many employers hire massage therapists as independent contractors when they really should be employees. It is really really rare that a massage therapist will ever be a true independent contractor. The employer must choose the correct classification.

Your Salary as a massage therapist will vary depending on where you live and work. Salary statistics like those created the the Bureau of Labor Statistics is inaccurate. They calculate salaries based on a 40 hour work week and massage therapists work weeks are usually 25-30 hours a week and rarely are a full 40 hours of hands on work.

The median annual wage for massage therapists was $41,420 in May 2018. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $21,340, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $78,280. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook

Many franchises and spas include tips as part of the salary but tips vary so much from 0 to $25 or so.
